CHEETAHS AND EAGLES ECO TOUR

A very interesting tour to Cheetah Outreach and Eagle Encounters. This day tour visits these two wildlife centres that do wonderful work in conservation and rehabilitation. Cheetah Outreach is promoting the protection and survival of the Southern African cheetah which is endangered through habitat loss and hunting.  Eagle Encounters rehabilitates injured and sick birds of prey and releases them back into the wild when they have recovered. Come and learn all about their brilliant efforts to protect and save some of the wildlife that we all love.

"A conservation day out"

The Cheetah Outreach Centre has just recently relocated to a new base in Somerset West, just outside Cape Town. The centre started off at Spier Wine Estate, who a number of years ago had donated land to a group of hand-raised cheetahs in the care of the newly established Cheetah Outreach Programme. Over the years they have grown and expanded so much that they have had to relocate to their brand new facility.

On our tour you can learn more about these incredible cats, either from a distance, or you can choose to get up close and personal in one of their enclosures. The new facility also boasts better access to the other small mammal enclosures : caracal, servals, bat-eared foxes, jackals and meerkats.

Eagle Encounters Raptor Rehabilitation Centre is still based at Spier Wine Estate. Eagle Encounters is a bird of prey rehabilitation, education, conservation and eco-tourism centre. As a self-funded, non-profit establishment, Eagle Encounters relies on the income generated by tourism to drive the numerous programmes it offers. The long-term vision of the Eagle Encounters project is to preserve the eco-environment by protecting birds of prey through the re-release of rehabilitated birds back into the wild. Watch how ancient falconry techniques are used to train them to hunt. On our tour we visit them for an interactive display.

While we are at Spier Wine estate we could also have the option of doing a wine tasting which introduces you to your choice of five wines produced on the estate. Their wine tasting experts are on hand for any advice and to help you purchase a bottle or two if you desire.

YOUR JOURNEY BEGINS HERE

Collection for this tour is at 09:30 from your Cape Town accommodation. Our qualified nature guide will brief you on the day tour before driving you in one a/c vehicles from Cape Town along the N2 towards Somerset West. There we visit the brand new Cheetah Outreach facility at Paardevlei. We will take part in the standard tour taken by one of Cheetah Outreaches local guides who will explain what the conservation program is all about and also give you lots of information about both the Cheetahs and the Anatolian sheep dogs, which they buy in, train and distribute to farmers to scare away cheetahs from their farmlands, thus saving both the cheetahs and the farmstock. You will also visit the enclosures for the small mammals, like the caracal (lynx) , serval and bat-eared foxes. There is the optional extra opportunity to have a personal cheetah encounter with either an adult cheetah or a cub. (please ask us about the relevant prices of that).

After the visit to Cheetah Outreach we head up the R44 towards Spier Wine estate where we visit the Eagle Encounters facility. We time our visit so that you can take part in the afternoon interactive display. Apart from learning a lot about the facility from the falconer on duty, you also get to meet and touch some of the display birds. After the display we go around  and view all the other birds of prey. Some are in various stages of rehabilitation, others are permanently injured and are looked after at the facility.

Depending on timing we have the option of doing a wine tasting at Spier and/or we can have a lunch at one of their great restaurants. Our guide will discuss these options with you.
