Khwa ttu is the only San owned and operated culture centre in the Western Cape. It was set up as a joint venture between the Working Group of Indigenous Minorities in Southern Africa (WIMSA) and UBUNTU, a Swiss philanthropic foundation. It offers a fascinating insight to the history and culture of the San (previously known as Bushmen) community. Afruka Eco Tours recommends this experience as a true Responsible Tourism destination. Visitors can leave !Khwa ttu knowing that they have supported a San-owned, truly African development project.
This incredibly interesting tour is to the !Khwa ttu San Cultural Centre based on a Nature Reserve approximately one hour from Cape Town. Come and join us if you want to learn about the fascinating history of Africa’s “first people” and hear about the challenges they face in the modern South Africa. It is a living celebration of past and present San (bushmen) Culture, a very uplifting and inspirational experience. This tour gives an in-depth understanding of the historical complexities of the San culture and the interaction between the large number of San groups spread out over Southern Africa.
The nature reserve contains many species of large animals and antelope including the beautiful Zebra, the large Eland and the energetic Springbok, it also has an abundance of other smaller mammals, birdlife and fynbos plants. However the highlight of the tour is a 2 to 3 hour guided bush experience with the experienced San guides based on the reserve. The centre has an excellent restaurant, a photo exhibition hall and an arts and crafts shop. Many of the items in the shop are manufactured by San communities and the profits go back into the communities.
Our qualified guide will collect you from your Cape Town accommodation at 08:00, and transport you the 80kms in one of our private A/C vehicles. We head up the West Coast road northwards towards !Khwa ttu and the drive takes about one hour.
When we arrive at the centre we enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and have a look around before going out with the San Guides on a 2 to 3 hour guided bush experience around the nature reserve on a tractor pulled viewing trailer. After a short drive you disembark and the guides take you on foot to show a number of their traditional hunting, tracking and survival skills. This walk ends at their replica San village where they demonstrate the ancient ways of life in a San community. Everything from how to start a fire, to preserving and cooking the food they gather and hunt, to making jewellery and the relationships within the group.
After the village visit you climb aboard the trailer again to drive up to the highest point of the reserve, where you are offered wonderful views of Table Mountain in the distance and the West Coast just below us. At this point you disembark again and visit the Boma, a traditional sheltered gathering place for a lecture on the various San groups and the different languages they speak. You even get a chance to practice their clicks.
From the boma it is another short drive back to the centre where you get the opportunity to watch a fascinating video about the San people and view their excellent photo exhibition. At the end of this tour we can head back to Cape Town or you have the option to enjoy a great lunch at the wonderful restaurant at the centre. Great food with a lot of the ingredients grown at !Khwa ttu.
When we depart for Cape Town we will take a slow drive back and stop to take photos at Bloubergstrand which has spectacular views of Cape Town and Table Mountain. We arrive back in Cape Town in the late afternoon.
